Why the weakest station is the only one that matters

In a factory, every station upstream of the bottleneck piles up work in front of it and every station downstream sits waiting. Add capacity anywhere except the bottleneck and total output does not move — you have spent money to make the queue longer.

Training behaves the same way, for a less obvious reason. Your physique is judged as a whole. A chest that is 20% above where it should be does not compensate for rear delts at 25% of theirs; it makes the imbalance more visible, not less. The muscle that is furthest below its target is setting what the whole structure looks like, and it is almost never the one that gets the attention.

Why people miss it

Because the total looks fine. Someone doing 144 sets a week is not undertrained by any measure. The volume is there — it is pointed at the stations that were already running at capacity, usually the ones that are most enjoyable to train and easiest to feel. Nothing about that shows up in a weekly total. It only shows up per muscle, measured against a target, which is what the table above does.

What to do once you find it

  1. Do not add sets. If you are already near your weekly capacity, adding volume to the constraint on top of everything else buys fatigue you cannot recover from. Move sets instead, from a station running over target.
  2. Fix frequency before volume. A muscle trained once a week is under-served even when the weekly total looks correct. Split it across two sessions first.
  3. Re-measure after a block, not after a week. One good session is noise. Eight weeks against the same table is a signal.
This tool reads what you type. It compares your reported sets against the target for your experience level and training days, using the same engine as the plan builder. It cannot see your exercise selection, your proximity to failure, or whether a set was taken through a full range — all of which can turn a set that counts on paper into a set that returns nothing. Where the targets come from

Weekly capacity is derived from a practical ceiling of about 25 working sets per session.
